WHAT IS CHRISTIAN SCIENCE?

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever. (John 14:16)

Christian Science is a religion based on the teachings and healings of Christ Jesus. It draws its authority from the Bible, and its complete teachings are set forth in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, written and published by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, in 1875. A distinctive part of this Science is the healing of physical disease as well as sin by spiritual means alone through an understanding of God and prayer.

ARE CHRIST JESUS’ TEACHINGS APPLICABLE TODAY?

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. (John 14:12)

As the principles of mathematics have practical application in every age, Jesus’ teachings are being successfully applied today to heal disease, lack, unemployment, and discordant relationships. Those teachings, as applied by Jesus, are available to everyone, everywhere, anytime, because they are based on an understanding of God as Love.

THE CHURCH OF CHRIST, SCIENTIST

In 1879 in Boston, Massachusetts, Mary Baker Eddy founded The Church of Christ, Scientist, "to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing" (Church Manual, p. 17). The First Church of Christ, Scientist, Boston, is also known as The Mother Church. Christian Science churches established in other locations are branch churches of The Mother Church. They are named "First Church of Christ, Scientist; Second Church of Christ, Scientist; and so on, where more than one church is established in the same place." (Church Manual, p. 71) A Christian Science Society is a group of Christian Scientists holding public services that has not yet completed all requirements for a branch church.

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE PRACTITIONERS

Christian Science practitioners "are devoted full-time to helping others through the prayer-based system explained in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures and are available to give treatment through prayer" (The Christian Science Journal). This Journal contains a worldwide directory of practitioners.

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE NURSES

These caring individuals are experienced Christian Scientists who are prepared to provide spiritual reassurance and skillful physical care consistent with the theology of Christian Science. You’ll find a directory of nurses in The Christian Science Journal.

SUNDAY SERVICES

This healing service is conducted by a First and Second Reader elected by and from the membership. There is no ordained clergy. Our pastor is the Bible and the Christian Science denominational textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. These two books have been ordained as our pastor. The specific texts to be read during the Sunday service are listed in the Christian Science Quarterly Bible Lessons and are read world wide in branch churches. These citations provide an outline for daily individualized study.

SUNDAY SCHOOL

Teachers and students up to the age of 20 find answers to questions of today's young people in the timeless truths about God and man found in the Bible and Science and Health. The Ten Commandments, the Sermon on the Mount, and The Lord's Prayer are among their first lessons.

WEDNESDAY EVENING MEETINGS

The Wednesday evening testimonial meetings are a vital part of the spiritual mission of this church. The purpose of this service is to give gratitude to God for all the blessings He bestows. Selected readings from the Bible and the Christian Science textbook set the healing tone of the meeting. The congregation is invited to share experiences of healing and to tell of new insights they have gained through the study of Christian Science.
